Regarding Esther: I guess your view depends on your belief of the degree of God's sovereignty. You either believe God chose Esther to go through these things...or God allowed Esther to do it and then worked it out for her good and the good of His people. She was on parade, but she was selected because she was already beautiful. Surely we don't believe God flaunted her? Either way, she stil ended up married to a non-Jew, correct? Oh..great post,by the way. What a wonderfully mature description of married intimacy!

I would disagree that Esther "flaunted it for the Kingdom". She was selected,...she did not volunteer for a beauty pageant. She fulfilled all of the requirements that were placed upon her during this grueling process of being objectified because of her beauty and in God's sovereignty, she became the new queen. We do not have any evidence from the Bible that she was in any way immodest, or inappropriate. Due to the custom of the time in which she lived, she became a wife or concubine of the king the moment she went in to him. Nothing else would have been expected of her conduct considering the time in which she lived. She was drop-dead gorgeous, plain and simple, and this was not sin in the least. If others lusted after her, it was their sin, not hers.

I can think of an example of "flaunting it for the Kingdom." Esther endured year long beauty tortures exceeding those of a Miss America pageant in order to be presented as a possible queen for King Xerxes of Persia. And she was made queen. And she was used by God to again save His people. However, I do not believe that is the lesson the book of Esther is trying to teach. There's lots of lust in it, though.

This is a great post on many levels. First you help us to see that we are all in process. This process is refining us and conforming us to the image of Christ.
Secondly, it is a great reminder of why we are accepted and forgiven, because He was condemned for us. We cannot beat this drum enough.

Thank you for the post John! In #2 you make a great point when you talked about Satan using lust to attack marriages and future marriages.

Great post John. What a great story of grace and forgiveness. The power of the gospel penetrates all areas of our depravity.
