What is Insecurity Really?

Insecurity stems from placing belief in yourself and your own abilities when that faith should be placed in God. What is insecurity but doubt in your own abilities and skills? If you stood on the promises of the unchanging Architect and Sustainer of the universe, how could you justify this kind of worry? We’re talking about the God who keeps His eye on the sparrow. We’re speaking of the God who regulates the rotation of galaxies, yet still sees that the jerk who cut you off in traffic didn’t slam into and kill you. If your faith is placed in a being so powerful and so caring and so diligent, what do you have to fear? Psalm 27:1 (ESV) expresses this thought perfectly:

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What man or woman is worthy of your reverence? Are you worthy of your own? Your spouse? Your mother or father? Even your child? Of every human being you’ve ever met, out of all the people about whom you’ve heard or read, who is/was perfect? I challenge you to name one individual who never let anyone down including himself/herself and including God. Everyone tires. Everyone weakens; even if only on their deathbed. Everyone except the Almighty, His Son and His Spirit.

The first sin in the Garden was trusting our own judgment rather than God’s. When we place our trust in the fallible, broken mess that is man, or anything he has fabricated, and expect that trust never to be compromised, we show ourselves to be fools.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. – Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)

God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? – Numbers 23:19 (ESV)

For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed. – Malachi 3:6 (ESV)

I agree with you that we shouldn’t have insecurity if we truly put our faith in God. Overcoming insecurity is a hard thing for some people to do because it is a deep part of who they are, even rooted in their childhood. It may take years for some people to conquer this sin. It is possible through the power of the holy spirit.

By the way… this blog post was entirely too short! :)

good stuff, Jared. Christ calls us to come and die, to take up our cross with Him. Dying to self-love is probably top of that list.

Insecurity can be a serious issue. But it’s not simply a matter of arrogance; we just don’t trust God enough. The problem is much deeper than simply a lack of religious faith. Lack of faith is a byproduct of this mess we’re in. It’s been this way since the fall of Eden. None of this is new. Our insecurity reflects our state of mind. We haven’t merely lost faith in God. We’ve been separated from him. It’s so bad we need a mediator just to talk to him. No, the problems of man run deep. Insecurity isn’t even the worst example. Thankfully, though, it won’t always be this way. Thank God!
